Sigh, Another Election on the Near Horizon

The feints and publicly-viewed overtures have been made. The psychological preparations to inform Canadians that another too-soon federal election is in the offing is front-and-centre. The obligatory and civilized but hollow consultations have taken place between the prime minister and the leaders of the opposing parties in Parliament.

Each of whom has come away from their meeting with Stephen Harper convinced that it was a charade, the die is cast.

And look here, just coincidentally, important Members of Parliament, those in Cabinet positions, have been sprinkling largess suddenly in their ridings. It's ever so nice to be able to do that kind of thing; loot the Treasury and offer humble gifts to voters.

This process has, however, nothing whatever to do with a looming election call. It's merely an indication of the generosity of a kindly government. Who wouldn't cast a vote for such an empathetic government?

And since it's evident that this is a Parliament that is stuck in nowhereland because of the ongoing opposition of other party leaders unwilling to lend themselves to an agenda prosecuted on behalf of a party whose vision of Canada is adverse to their own, there is no consensus.

Each party to its own values and customary vision of the country's needs. This is a partisan Parliament, one that is squeaking by.

The current government has performed well on the international stage. Although it still has to bite the bullet and do what none of its predecessors saw fit to do; make good on the promise Canada made to increase its pledge to alleviate world poverty, to finally reach that hitherto-elusive 0.7% goal.

As a donor nation our current pledge of 0.45% of GNP doesn't equate well with our stated mission.

An incensed Stephane Dion, who claims this to be a ruinous government, uncaring and unfit to govern, is champing at the bit to demonstrate how fit, committed and great the Liberals would be, back in power. And Canada groans.

Meanwhile, the current government has undertaken some internal governing initiatives that leave doubt in the minds of people, seeming to make us more vulnerable to vital items like food and flight safety.

And Prime Minister Harper seems set to offer taxpayer support to failing industries, including the auto sector. Just as he is obviously set to pay a working visit to Michaelle Jean, Canada's Governor-General, to persuade her to do her duty and dissolve Parliament.

Regretting, in the process, his rashness in enacting legislation to recognize given dates for election calls.

But that's life, isn't it? And pssst! the latest polls seem to show a Conservative majority is a real potential, this time around....
