They're All Good Kids

Perhaps when they're new-born, with their genetic endowments, yet to be shaped by nurturing or lack of it. But later on, when through a process of emotional growth, experiences and development of character, well then, that's another story altogether, unfortunately.

Every mother loves her child, or her children as the case may be. Somehow, cannot see the reality of what she, through neglect or incapacity has permitted to mature.

As in the trial just recently concluded in Ottawa, finding a young man, 17 at the time of the incident, guilty of murder in the first degree. This young thug, surrounded by his thuggish friends, decided to harass another young man of 21, sitting quietly at the back of an OC Transpo bus, listening to his girlfriend's loaned iPod, when it was demanded that he produce a cigarette which he didn't have, then surrender the iPod, which he refused to do.

The result was that a knife was produced, and a struggle ensued, where the older male, considerably smaller than his attacker, attempted to defend himself, only to be stabbed, fatally, to the heart. After the trial, the mother and aunt and assorted family members of the murderer, verbally assaulted the mourning mother, brother, sister, father and aunt of the victim.

Their son was misunderstood, he was really a good boy, and they had no right to consider him otherwise. He was himself a tragic victim of an altercation, he hadn't meant to kill anyone, despite witness testimony - including that of the murderer's chums, that he was violently determined to do whatever he wanted, that it was a power struggle between him and his chosen victim.

Now, a week after two young men were hunted down and shot to death by another ruthless killer who was persuaded by his mother to surrender himself to police, this mother too is testifying to all who will hear her out that her son is a "good kid", from a good and caring family. A day before he murdered two young men in cold blood in daylight hours in an apartment building's corridors he celebrated his presence in Facebook.

"Matt Kalli is a Hater ... YEA das Right ... I hate All ya'll Hater haters!" His Facebook profile reveals he likes rap and reggae and his favourite television programs range from The Simpsons to The Sopranos. What values were invested in this good kid of whom his mother reveals "Right now I am devastated. I am confused. I am scared and right now, I am seeing a good kid that don't deserve this".

This social misfit has ended the lives of two other young men, and his mother states how difficult the situation has become for her son the murderer, how hard it is on her family. Has she given thought to the pain her son's blind hatred and violent temperament has caused the families of two other young men?
