Another bright young life evaporated; a candle lit and the wick too short to remain aflame, wisped into nothingness.  Whatever has happened to compassion?  To imagining oneself in the plight of another who cries out for some thought to be given to her plight?  To hearing someone's anguished cry for help and understanding, and to turn backs on that cri de ceour.

To decide that the injury is not yet deep enough, and to add to the agony by repeating cruelties that drove a young girl into a frenzy of despair.

Through the instant messaging of social media, cruelties may now be darted against others at a remove; so much easier to perform, without having to look directly into the anguished eyes of a victim.  And since it is done at a remove, with no need to be present while assailing another person's personal vulnerability by heaping insults upon derision, slander on contempt, it is as though one's hatred is anonymous, and no one can be held responsible.

What else but deep despair of her place within society, feeling herself without value to anyone, emotionally deprived of the friendship of her peers could drive a fifteen-year-old girl feeling desperately vulnerable to abandonment, would persuade her to record a video whose silent, printed message drew the attention of those who tormented her, even as she pleaded for a friend to help her rise above her anguish.

And while her message moved others to tears of empathetic compassion, those who enjoyed having been the cause of the emotional turmoil she succumbed to, urged her with additional messages to try a little harder next time she made a move to take her own life.  Somehow she managed not to hear the encouragement of those who wished her well.  Somehow she heard the messages of hate instead.

And somehow she did try again, and this time she succeeded in ending her boundless misery.  To whom will her tormentors now turn, to gain their viciously predatory satisfaction?
