United Nations employees with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) who just happen to be members of the Hamas terrorist group, some of whom were proven to be involved in the October 7, 2023 invasion and slaughter in southern Israel, and journalists/photographers working under a Reuters byline or employed by Al Jazeera who are likewise linked to terrorist groups some of whom occupy positions that require direct acts of terrorism against Israel, writing biased columns and observations posing as neutral journalism published without hesitation by mainstream Western media.

 

One of these journalist-terrorists met his end on August 10, along with four other colleagues, in Gaza City leading world powers to condemn Israel for targeting journalists because safety is supposed to be guaranteed for members of the press in war zones, reporting the scenes of conflict that they observe -- for if combatants fail to recognize the vital importance of the objective reporters' accounts portray,  how would the world audience know what is  transpiring, whom to condemn, and which parties should be supported by world opinion?

 

The Israel Defense Forces has identified Anas al-Sharif as an actively serving member and head of a Hamas terrorist cell while doing double-duty as a journalist for the Qatari Al Jazeera network. That would be the Qatar that has given haven to top-echelon members of the Muslim Brotherhood's little offshoot, Hamas, in Doha. Al-Sharif was responsible, according to the IDF, for orchestrating and advancing rocket attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF troops.

Intelligence was released by the IDF which had recovered documents in Gaza indicating al-Sharif's military role within Hamas. These documents include personnel rosters, records of terrorist training courses phone directories and salary documents substantiating the man's involvement as a combatant and a commander within the Hamas network of terrorism aimed at destroying Israel. As evidence goes, it is complete and completely damning. And like the United Nations, Al Jazeera strenuously denies that any of its employees are linked to terrorism.

 

So the fiction that the documents detail of al-Sharif's fighter status and cell-leading positions dating to 2013, including leadership in rocket units and participation in elite Nukhba battalions must obviously be confusing this journalist's background activities with someone else entirely. Only that is the version preferred for public consumption by Al Jazeera, against Israel's and specifically the IDF's allegations.

The predatory, anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian 'victimhood injustice' of Qatar and Al Jazeera carry weight in excess of what a democratic, lawful nation-state of the Western alliance is held to represent in today's world.

This innocent journalist, this producer of unbiased news reports informing the world at large of Israel's assaults against Palestinians, a member of Hamas? Perish the thought. And while we're at it, brush aside the evidence consisting of documentation damning to his purported innocence, much less photographs attesting to his role as a valued comrade in terrorist activities. 

 

Head of the Arab Media Branch in the IDF, Col. Avicha Adraeee, posted photographs Sunday showing al-Sharif taking selfies with Hamas terror leaders, including Yahya Sinwar and Khalil al-Hayya. "Only a terrorist sits in the gatherings of terrorists", wrote Adraee. While the Israeli military state that al-Sharif led a Hamas cell, the Committee to Protect Journalists and other describe al-Sharif's death and those of the other four with him as retribution against journalists documenting the Gaza conflict.

 

Of the five journalists killed in the Sunday Israeli airstrike, all were Al Jazeera staffers of whom the IDF say they target individuals they identify as Hamas terrorists posing as reporters. A year earlier, Israeli army officials had accused al-Sharif and other Al Jazeera journalists of being members of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Col. Adraee had attacked Al Jazeera in a July 24 video, accusing al-Sharif as part of the Hamas terrorist group.

 

The strike that killed him and the other four Al Jazeera journalists represented a "targeted assassination" stated Al Jazeera, accusing Israel of 'incitement'.

Neutral UN Agencies in the Middle East

UN Security Council Resolutions 1559 and 1701 tasked the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in 1978 to the critical role of maintaining peace between Israel and Lebanon with UNIFIL set by mandate to monitor and prevent hostilities from breaking out into active conflict. Hezbollah, the Shi'ite militia recognized as a terrorist group, had established itself in southern Lebanon as a challenge to the legitimate, albeit weak and fractured Lebanese government. Its self-appointed role was to obey its masters in Iran as a proxy militia of the terrorist mold in helping the Islamic Republic in its mission to destroy Israel.

Hezbollah was ordered by the United Nations under UNIFIL peacekeepers to surrender its weapons, leaving only the Lebanese military to carry and use weapons. Hezbollah never did surrender its weapons; the Lebanese military was too weak to do anything about it and UNIFIL was too uncertain to react. Since then, Hezbollah has been provided with vast stockpiles of weapons by Iran slipping them by the deliberately unobservant UNIFIL troops, aware of the armaments being provided by Hezbollah, for one purpose, to eventually seek to destroy Israel.

UNIFIL was obviously in no position given its clear abandonment of its orders to disarm Hezbollah and ensure there was no armed presence south of the Litani river. From its guard towers it was easily able to observe illicit, threatening activities, including tunnel infrastructure and weapons depots being methodically built over time, when its mandate schooled them to put a stop to any such actions. Hezbollah's constant bombardment with rockets of northern Israel from Hezbollah's perches in southern Lebanon continually breached Israel's  sovereign territory and led to the forced evacuation of some 60,000 Israelis.

 

When the IDF was finally ordered to seriously respond to the daily multiple shelling, and engage in some limited ground invasions they discovered the  reality of what had been assumed for decades; Hezbollah had assumed control of a vast shipment of military infrastructure over the years. The IDF discovered hundreds of weapons caches, tunnel shafts and underground command centres mere metres from the border with Israel. Also uncovered was an 800-square metre underground base used as a command centre.

It would not have been remotely possible for the UNIFIL personnel to overlook extensive tunnel networks, military bases and caches of weaponry, leaving the impression that an extensive network of tunnels, military bases and weapons caches were built under the watchful eye of a peacekeeping force meant to prevent such actions; an impression that reflects a reality. While tasked with ensuring security, the international peacekeeping force has been privy to outlawed activities taking place directly in their eyesight and with total impunity. Like its sister agency UNRWA which also sees no evil under its mandate, it demonstrate the sham that these UN agencies represent.

It was the discovery that UNRWA staff included hundreds who were also members of terrorist groups, some of whom had taken part in the October 7 massacre in southern Israel.That the UN system, its agencies and international courts were selectively weaponized against Israel became abundantly clear. 

 

Hezbollah has been permitted by UNIFIL to make use of its outposts. More recently, an Israeli tank, coming under direct fire from Hezbollah, attempted to seek cover to protect its crew and other Israeli soldiers when, backing up in tight circumstances, inadvertently backed into a UNIFIL post and he UN body promptly charged Israel with deliberately firing on its personnel. When charged by Israel for neglecting its duty in preventing Hezbollah from firing across the border into Israel, UNIFIL responded by saying that the terror group's building of tunnels and weapons depots took place on 'private property', taking the issue out of their hands.

In the Canadian House of Commons, shouts of "shame" in 2016 greeted the news from opposition Conservatives when the newly elected government of Justin Trudeau reversed the decision made by former Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government to cut off the UNRWA entirely in 2010, from funding by Canada. The reason for this decision was cited as the arm of the United Nations struck for the particular purpose of giving aid and comfort to displaced Palestinians had become an avenue for terror indoctrination.

UNRWA's focus on their network of 715 schools installed to serve Palestinian 'refugees' saw multiple reports emerging over the years that curricula for the schools had been discovered to be replete with materials referencing Israel as the "Zionist Occupation"; schoolbooks which praised suicide bombers as "martyrs", instilling in Palestinian children admiration for the 'resistance' and patterning them for a future as Palestinian martyrs themselves.

The $25 million annual funding by Canada was reinstated, despite these reports. The minister of international development at the time, stated that "robust control measures" were in play to ensure the funding was not used for any purpose other than supporting the legitimate education requirements of Palestinian children.

Her statement of reassurance notwithstanding, a leaked United Nations report of 2019 found the organization to be wracked with corruption and abuse; UNRWA head Pierre Krahenbuhl, along with a coterie of senior management being accused of "sexual misconduct, nepotism, retaliation, discrimination and other authority abuses in an issue of personal gain, suppressing legitimate dissent and achieve personal objectives". The report was obtained by Agence Fance-Press and became public.

Many of Canada's peer countries took steps to audit their Palestinian aid streams and to identify any funding that might be streamed toward Hamas. The European Commission this week announced an "urgent review of the EU's assistance for Palestine" in the wake of the October 7 weekend invasion of Israel and the vast array of atrocities carried out by terrorists from both Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, along with ordinary Palestinian citizens who took the opportunity to join the militias in committing their own stream of inhumane acts of terror.

Canadian funding, stated the Ministry of International Development Canada, is destined to continue moving to Gaza, "while ensuring that no money goes into the hands of Hamas". Gaza actually stands to receive greater funding than previously since months earlier Canada's Liberal government announced an increase in its UNRWA payments, necessary to ensure "peace and prosperity in the Middle East". 

Another $3 million was added to the $100 million pledged over four years, the added amount to be "emergency aid" partially earmarked for Gaza. Former Canadian ambassador to Israel Vivian Bercovici who herself is a stout critic of UNRWA, stated there is no way to ensure that Hamas gets no part of the funds Canada sends to UNRWA. "This is an outright lie. You give the money and there is no transparency or accountability. None."

Since 2007 when Hamas violently took over the Gaza Strip there has been serial redirection of aid funding toward terrorism. A story by The Telegraph recently noted that Hamas has openly published videos of their members digging up water pipes to turn them into rockets after the European Union spent over $144 million to upgrade bulk water pipelines in Gaza.

 

Multiple accusations of providing military support for Hamas have been charged against UNRWA -- or of providing open support for Hamas. A UN investigation in 2014 revealed that UNRWA schools were storing rockets for Hamas. UNRWA claimed innocence in the revelations, said they returned the weapons to "local authorities" so they could be used against Israel at a future date, firing across the border to towns, villages and kibbutzim, the very targets that were hit in Hamas's deadly weekend incursion. 

 

 Several UNRWA employees were suspended in 2015 when a probe by UN Watch found them uploading Facebook posts explicitly calling for violence against Israel. UNRWA schools have long been notorious for materials promoting violence and urging students to pursue the ultimate eradication of Israel. An extensive report funded by the European Union in 2021 analyzed 222 textbooks used in Palestinian schools, those operated by UNRWA included.

Throughout the textbooks, even in math and reading comprehensive textbooks, overtly anti-Israel sentiments were rife. A fourth grade math exercise asked "students to calculate the number of martyrs ... in Palestinian uprisings." 

"[A poem teaches students that to die as a martyr by killing Israelis is a] hobby. The poem glorifies the rejection of a peaceful ceasefire during battle, presenting peace-making as a sign of weakness."

"[Islamic education material depicts Jews as] inherently treacherous, and hostile to Islam and Muslims [including another grammar exercise implying that Jews are impure and defiling the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount in the Old City of Jerusalem]."

"Israel is described as having been implanted by an imperialist, European, colonial, anti-Arab conspiracy with the goal of dividing the Arab world."

"They were drafted, supervised, approved, printed, and distributed to thousands of students by UNRWA teachers and staff, whose names also appear on the materials as contributing to or supervising the content."
